We take a look at most important features coming to EMUI 11 on supported Huawei devices. Coinciding with the launch of Android 11 and as part of company’s developer conference on September 10, Huawei rolled out its new software for Android, EMUI 11.
We have spent a bit of time with its beta version before its announcement. While HarmonyOS will serve as new paradigm shift in Huawei’s software platform , other more immediate changes are on horizon with latest update to its Android-based interface, Emotion UI.
We currently find it on both company’s smartphones and tablets, and it will bring both cosmetic and functional changes.
What features does Huawei EMUI 11 have?
Move from EMUI 10.1 to EMUI 11 shouldn’t sideline existing Huawei users. At best, some aspects of EMUI 11 have been designed to improve user interaction, making it easier to keep track of where you’ve been and how it has affected your browsing with software .
Here is a summary of main features of Huawei EMUI 11 :
New AOD options
We start with something that you would normally see on a compatible mobile. Huawei has added new customization options in its Always-on Display configuration in EMUI 11.
You’ll find new categories like ‘Artistic’, which includes watch designs named after famous artists and styles that influenced them, like ‘Mondrian’ or ‘Memphis’.
You can choose from a color palette to customize your screen and there is even an option to extract colors from your camera or gallery. If this doesn’t suit you, you can use your own images and it now supports animations like GIFs.
New Gallery interface
When viewing photos tab in native EMUI Gallery app, you can now switch from monthly to daily view with a two-finger pinch. Interface change occurs with a new animation so you can get an idea of where your images are.
‘Albums’ tab, on other hand, has a new 4: 3 layout, which Huawei describes as “more energetic” and which comes with new organization options.
Change audio source
From Android 11 comes quick access to a switch to change audio, which appears when you are playing video from several different audio outputs and are visible to mobile or tablet you are using.
You will find it in notifications section or as a floating window and it allows you to change your preferred audio source with just one touch.
In part it is an evolution of an existing feature and in part a far-reaching measure: EMUI’s multi-screen functionality has been improved for version 11.
Now you can move active floating windows, change their size and minimize them in so-called ‘Quick Ball’, which you will find on side of screen. Then you have option of choosing which apps you want to be able to switch from one to another, as well as possibility of switching from split screen mode with a simple gesture: press for a while and drag.
On devices with a larger screen, such as folding phones and tablets , there is room for two floating apps running at same time, one next to other.
Improved Notepad app
Now, you have option to extract text from images, either from your device’s gallery or directly from camera. This feature even supports documents longer than one page, so you can scan and extract text from long documents at once.
There are new options to export a Word document and possibility of sending extracted text through Huawei Share.
Multi-screen collaboration 3.0
As an extension of new features of Notes app, those who have several devices compatible with EMUI 11 and have multi-device collaboration activated will be able to open Notepad on your tablet , touch camera icon and select your mobile from menu. mobile camera will open and you can use it to extract text from an analog source in real time.
This camera (and microphone) that works on various devices also comes for other apps, such as MeeTime and potentially will also in future for third-party video calling apps.
Aforementioned multi-window functionality, when used in conjunction with MSC 3.0, now also supports up to three applications running on a single PC at same time.

Third party peripheral compatibility in MeeTime: Wireless compatibility for example with KanDao Meeting 360º conference system and Drift Ghost 4K + action camera.
